"Shah's music reflects the insatiably curious mind of an ethnographer, the soul of a poet, and the eye of a painter." - Owen McNally, WNPR Hailed for possessing an "amazing dexterity for musical languages," (NPR) vocalist/composer KAVITA SHAH makes work in deep engagement with the jazz idiom while addressing and advancing its global sensibilities. A native New Yorker of Indian origin fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and French, Shah incorporates her ethnographic research on Brazilian, West African, and Indian musical traditions into her original repertoire. Her album VISIONS, co-produced by guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland), was dubbed a "sparkling debut" (Boston Globe), "daring and ambitious (Jazzwise), and Best Vocal & Debut Album of 2014 (Will Hermes, Rolling Stone). Her second album, a program of standards in duet with bassist François Moutin, is due for release in 2017. Shah has sung her music at notable festivals and concert halls throughout North America, Europe, and Australia, including the Kennedy Center, Winter Jazz Fest, Rochester Jazz Festival, Melbourne Jazz Festival, Brisbane Jazz Festival, Perth Jazz Festival, Art Basel: Miami, Blue Note, Jazz Standard, Joe's Pub, and Paris' Duc des Lombards. She has worked with such artists as Loueke, Moutin, Sheila Jordan, Martial Solal, Greg Osby, Steve Wilson, and Yacouba Sissoko. Named by Downbeat as Best Graduate Jazz Vocalist (2012), and recipient of ASCAP's Young Jazz Composers Award (2013), Shah holds a Master's in Jazz Voice from Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor's in Latin American Studies from Harvard. Her work has been supported by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, the Jerome Foundation, and the Asian Cultural Council.
