When you think of violin music, do you think laced-up classical and tuxedos? Then you're in for a big surprise when the lights go up and Damien Escobar, known to fans as Dame Esco, strolls out and starts playing. Clad in athletic shoes, fashionable casual wear that always just happens to show off his toned and tatted biceps, and a hat, Escobar starts with a classical base and then blends in R&B, jazz, pop and hip-hop. It's passionate, it's high-energy and it's intimate, with Escobar chatting amiably between numbers. Raised on the streets of Queens, Escobar began playing at the age of 8 and graduated from the Juilliard School of Music at just 13. He's come a long way from playing for change in the NYC subways. Check him out on YouTube and then get yourself a ticket to see this fast-rising star in concert at Lisner Auditorium when he swings through D.C. on his "Heart & Soul" Tour.
