The Filthy Tongues first visit to The Cool Cat Club last year was a very special night. The trio of former Goodbye Mr Mackenzie members Martin Metcalfe, Fin Wilson and Derek Kelly are a stunning live band with Metcalfe resembling the MC of a debauched, vaguely gothic cabaret, which effortlessly churned out pop classics, sinister dark Blues and full-blown stadium-fitting anthems with an absolutely spellbinding intensity. The debut album as The Filthy Tongues, Jacob's Ladder, is an absolutely fantastic record and on stage the songs from the album taken on an even greater power. The album and performances received rave reviews and made a number of end of the year lists. Louder Than War described it as 'A vivid and visceral exploration of Edinburgh's underbelly that recalls Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds at their most intense' while Is This Music? stated that 'Jacob's Ladder must surely be a contender for Scottish Album of the Year or the bloomin' Mercury even'. It didn't win the Mercury but it shoulda been a stone-cold contender. With a new album due out in September, The Filthy Tongues are due to tour again and are quite simply a not to be missed live act.
