A comic play, “Farinelli and the King” had its debut in 2015 at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, where the run sold out. The play transferred to the West End to critical praise and six Olivier Award nominations. It tells the true story of Philip V (rendered as Philippe V in the play) of Spain, the 18th-century king who suffered from depression that was apparently held at bay by performances by the famous castrato Farinelli, who gave up Europe’s opera houses to be a court musician for the king.
