The original version of performance artist Taylor Mac's "A 24-Decade History of Popular Music" is 24 hours long. That's right -- 24 hours of nonstop costume changes, singing and audience participation that starts with the civil war and doesn't stop until it gets to today. You won't have to go through the whole 24 hours when Mac brings his abridged version to ASU Gammage in Tempe, but you might be into the idea after getting the highlight reel. This breakneck journey through the history of American song also reveals the long and spotty social history of America, and even with the short version, the audience participation quickly builds a sense of community. It's not just a show, it's an experience. You'll probably go out of your comfort zone at least once or twice, but it will all be 100% worth it.
