About Kolas
Genre - Folk & Blues
Hometown - Montréal, Québec
Nicolas Muraton alias Kolas, has always been into music since a tender age. Coming from a country village in the outer reaches of Montreal’s suburbs, this Folk-Blues singer-songwriter is a multi-instrumentalist armed with a guitar and harmonica that has been enchanting crowds since 2011 with his sweet ballads and charming personality.
As the story goes, it all started in Phillipsburg in a restaurant where he was working as a busboy.
At the yearly Halloween party, an eager Kolas asked if he could pick up the guitar and show what he can do. Magic happened on stage that night. Following a warm reaction from the crowd, a feeling of bliss and oneness propelled him to take his artistry to new heights.
Kolas, a derivation from Nicolas, represents an alter ego that allows him to go deeper within himself to express his most profound emotions. Presence, his first self-produced EP represents just that. Exploring a range of introspective thoughts and feelings, it serves as an auto-portrait expressed through a Venetian mask. It is with this mask that he permits himself to dive in a world where he can freely express and explore the core of his thoughts, stripping away self-imposed barriers without any censorship.
But how can such a joyous and humorous person create music that is so sombre and melancholic one might ask?
‘’This alter-ego serves to expulse my negative energies’’ he says with an honest tone of humility, ‘’It’s what I’m living at the present moment, a collection of ideas born out of insecurities, impressions, and personal thoughts’’.
It is therefore through the very existence of this character that the real Nicolas can be content and easy-going in everyday life.
His songs provide a source of comfort in the face of heartache and sorrow, alluring the listener with its unabashed sincerity. The rawness of emotion undoubtedly comes from his creative process; in an effort to keep his sound pure and untainted, he aims not to overwork his songs and keep them unpolished, staying true to their original conception.
The final product will softly hurt you with its honesty, but heal you with hope; allowing your mind and soul to be transported in the bittersweet world of Blues music.
