About SHADOWQUEEN

SHADOWQUEEN’ are:
Robbi Zana (lead Vocals, Bass Guitar & Keyboards)
Si Hopman (Guitar, backing Vocals)
Alex Deegan (Drums, backing Vocals)

With Robbi Zana's brazen, honest and emotion- fuelled vocals firmly to the fore atop a churning, violent swell of Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots-sized riffs, 'Don't Tell' {the album} is a pleasurably pummeling experience, but the care taken to include instantly memorable choruses check out 'What You Want', 'Any Other Day' and 'Wake Up' - and cleverly woven arrangements shows there's a deep well of creativity just waiting to be exploited. An impulsive, impressive debut!

SHADOWQUEEN – ‘Don’t Tell’

SHADOWQUEEN is a hard rock trio from Melbourne, Australia. The band’s debut ‘Don’t Tell’ release will no doubt attract comparisons to the first ‘Halestorm’ album, but SHADOWQUEEN have a little more dirt around the edges and, if anything, the approach is even more direct. Initially my attention was focused on vocalist Robbi Zana, who also handles Bass duties, but each member has a major part to play in shaping the band’s sound and style.

The title track has a distinct ‘Queens of The Stone Age’ vibe fuelled by an infectious riff and Zana adds a terrific vocal that is fiery and snarling in equal measures. Both ‘Any Other Day’ and ‘What You Want’ have a gritty resonance yet Zana manages to spit out the lyrics with a highly melodic intent. ‘Silence’ is built on another deeply dirty riff that grinds away at the senses until it hurts whilst ‘Wake Up’ is an up-tempo in your face number that sees lead Guitarist Si Hopman flex his solo muscles nicely. ‘Bruised’ features Robbi’s most intense vocal and she goes through a range of emotions that act as a rage-filled attention seeking caustic oratory. Aside from the brief ‘Prelude To Silence’ instrumental and brooding intensity of ‘Karma’ there is no real let up and the lack of subtlety is possibly my only criticism.

‘Don’t Tell’ contains 11 short hits to the musical pleasure zone featuring instantly memorable hooks and immediate melodies. 30 minutes pass by in a heartbeat leaving you breathless yet craving a repeat performance.

SHADOWQUEEN certainly have the songs and the musicianship is excellent. Whether the band can achieve the success of the aforementioned ‘Halestorm’ will depend on the exposure ‘Don’t Tell’ receives and whether they can pick up a few support slots on high profile tours in the near future, fingers crossed!

There's something solid and powerful about a rock trio, there's been some great ones in rock history and SHADOWQUEEN have what it takes to join their forerunners. Then there's a trio fronted by a strong, confident sexual Woman that uses her intellect and what nature gave her to help create something to set them apart from all others before and around them.
Hit the skip button and land where ever you want and that track is going to rip your head off. SHADOWQUEEN's Debut Album is destined for Rock Royalty.
