MAYTA

MAYTA was born in Piura - Peru in 1998. The Rimach brothers: Ivan, Renato, and Victor were fascinated by the family tradition of music performed in Sunday gatherings and the intellectual approach to art. They all moved to Dallas, TX in 2001. It took some time to solidify the sound of the band as a family with this huge change. They adapted slowly to their new life in the States. MAYTA took a serious turn in 2005 when Victor came back from Lima from studying audio engineer for a year. The brothers decided to push MAYTA in Texas with the intention of explaining their eclectic history and culture with music patterns. In the Dallas scene, MAYTA found new friends and welcomed them in to the family. Bryan Gonzalez (Mexico), was a key addition to the band. His turntables atmospherics, psychedelic loops, and almost lost in space personality brought the brothers together even more. Jonathan Merla (Dallas, TX via Veracruz Mexico), Berklee alumni, maestro of latin percussion, and visionary, incorporated the Afro-Carribean soul to the band. Mauricio Barroso (Cuba), the shaman and executioner of rhythm, is the solid base of MAYTA's music. The last addition to the band was Venezuelan-Bolivian percussionist Sofia Weir, who added a fresh and more folkloric vibe to the band, due to her playing at Oak Cliff's traditional Venezuelan folkloric band Parranda Venezuela since she was 5 years old. MAYTA released its first EP, Antropofago, in March 2013 and won "Best Latin Act" at the Dallas Observer Music Awards (DOMA 25) in November of the same year, followed up by being the first Latin band featured on the cover of The Dallas Observer. MAYTA is a blend of latin american culture expressed in musical patterns. Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba and all the Cosmic Race.
