About WorldFly

WORLDFLY are an Australian band who have been touring Germany for the past six years. Lead singer Michael Maher first traveled to Germany as a young backpacker and after falling in love with the country ended up spending 10 years living there. Michael is fluent in German and these days WORLDFLY think of Germany as their second home. WORLDFLY have played hundreds of shows at clubs and festivals throughout Germany, including the 2010 support for Gurrumul’s European tour. Some notable performances and venues include: Konzertsaal in Berlin, Festaal in Zurich, Theaterhaus in Stuttgart, Kulturekirche in Cologne, Di Duif in Amsterdam, The Flagey in Brussels, Shepherds Bush Empire in London, New Morning in Paris, The Academy in Dublin, Fete de la musique in Luxembourg, ZMF in Freiburg, and Halle 02 and Heidelberg. They have also performed at some of the biggest festivals in Australia, including, The East Coast and West Coast Blues and Roots Festivals, Woodford Folk Festival and Darwin Festival. In 2010 and 2011 WORLDFLY sold over 10,000 copies of their debut album, ‘it’s too late for turning back’, playing club shows and performing on the streets of Europe. WORLDFLY’S first two singles, ‘someone special’ and ‘a small boat’, were played on radio stations across Germany including SWR3, Radio Eins, Deutschlandfunk, Bayern 3 and Radio Fritz (Berlin). Their second single, ‘someone special’, won Michael Maher an Australian Songwriter of the Year award, and their debut album was voted in ABC DIG radio’s top 10 of 2010. In 2011 WORLDFLY re-wrote the music to Reinhard Mey’s classic song ‘Über den Wolken’ and started performing it at their live shows. After a delighted response from German fans, they went into the studio with Engineer Sky van Hoff (Mrs Greenbird) to record it. Their new version has been presented to Reinhard Mey who gave it his blessing and approved its release! WORLDFLY have recently signed a record deal with indie label powerhouse, Perambulator Records, and on the strength of their upcoming second album (Produced by ARIA winner Jimi Maroudas), have also been picked up by Dramatico in Germany. After two years of songwriting and production, this year’s summer tour is the first chance to hear WORLDFLY’S spectacular collection of new songs.
