In an industry where the carnal desires of the human ego are satisfied through meaningless lyrics force-fed on our psyche through the ruse of music in the form of hypnotizing beats, the sounds of the grassroots of hip hop begin to resonate from “Killa City” (or Kansas City if you aren’t familiar with the term), giving us the prototype by which the blueprint of hip hop was meant to build. Urban Republic composed of Dewey da Don and Novacain exude the spirit of their idolized predecessors every time they breathe on the mic. The street anthem “Heavy Artillery” ft. Fly D’Antoni is a long-awaited reintroduction to the midwest sound that artists and groups like UGK, The Ghetto Boys, Paul Wall, and Chamillionaire introduced into our homes during their respective times of influence along the golden timeline of hip hop. Just by listening to Dewey da Don’s Boss like approach or Novacain’s confident swagger when delivering their messages, Kansas City wouldn’t be the demographic you’d assign as their place of origin, but in being so is the driving force behind Urban Republic showing and proving to the world that just like the tattoo on Dewey da Don’s back – “Killa City” is the topic of discussion in reference to who’s next to shine. “Kansas City is a city with little to no opportunity to develop yourself in a positive way.” says Dewey da Don of his city’s infamous moniker. Urban Republic represent the two different character archetypes in the drama of the inner city; “I was more participatory while Novacain was around it more through his family. They Formed in 2006, Urban Republic's Dewey Da Don, also known as the Hustler and Ambitious one, and Novacain, the Introspective and Calm one. Though different in so many ways, together their unique styles compliment each other and give the group the perfect balance. The two met while attending the same high school, and at the time, they only really communicated while passing each other in the hallways or in between classes. It was while the two worked at “Sonic”, that they developed the friendship that remains strong today. After a failed attempt with another music group, Nova and Dewey decided to join forces and begin creating songs together.
