Toronto Northern Lights

This talented and innovative group of singers has represented the Ontario District at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Championship each year they gave competed since their formation in 1998, becoming the International Chorus Champions at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto in July 2013. Prior to that, the chorus and brought home five consecutive Silver medals in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, and medalled in every subsequent year. With 34 men on stage in Kansas City in 2000, they were proud to be recognized as the smallest chorus to ever receive a medal at the International competition, and even more proud to be considered instrumental in shifting the perceptions that a smaller chorus can compete at the highest levels within the singing society. TNL's expansive repertoire ranges from Barbershop to Broadway, Vocal Jazz to Doo-Wop, and from Gershwin to the Beatles. As a testament to this chorus' versatility, the Toronto Northern Lights was selected as the winner in the Cultural Traditions category of the CBC / Radio-Canada National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs in 2000. Although Toronto is their home base, the chorus draws members from a large area, with men willing to travel 200 miles (in all seasons!) for rehearsals, just to be part of the excitement. The Toronto Northern Lights is a dynamic group of men working towards a common goal of musical excellence to thrill and charm their audiences. The chorus attracts members from a complete range of ages, backgrounds and employment; from twenty-year-old university students, to business professionals, to men in retirement. They have created 4 recordings for the public to enjoy over and over again, including their most recent compilation ' The Gift of Music'. Our Mission Statement The Toronto Northern Lights chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society is a chorus with high standards for membership, dedicated to excellence and continuous improvement in our singing and entertaining. We will continually strive to be among the best performing chapters in the Barbershop Harmony Society, providing the finest outlet for individual singers in the Ontario District, in order to challenge and motivate our members. We exist to maintain a fun, fraternal singing organization for our members. TNL is the 2013 International Chorus Champion of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
