About The Upsetters

The band included guitarist Alva Lewis, organist Glen Adams and brothers Aston 'Family Man' Barrett and Carlton Barrett, on bass and drums respectively. The group also recorded as The Hippy Boys. From 1968 until 1972, they were backing band of Lee "Scratch" Perry, a.k.a. "The Upsetter" - a name reputedly given to him by producer Coxsone Dodd in the days when he used to set up Dodd's sound system. In the autumn of 1969, they had a #5 UK hit single with the instrumental 'Return of Django'.

After a conflict with Dodd, The Upsetters left Lee Perry as in-house band to join Bob Marley; who was marketed to a white mainstream audience and thus needed a self-contained band (something unusual in Jamaica, but a necessity for a Rock orientated public). The Upsetters took this one of a kind opportunity and went on to form the nucleus of Bob Marley's backing band The Wailers.
