things you've gotta know... 1. we were created.... spaceships are cool were formed in 2006 by electronica musician rob maddison are sometimes many, sometimes few. from solo at 'the escape pod' studio & acoustic/laptop sets, to flaming lips style onstage parties with up to eight band members, in bright orange spacesuits & giving away candy flying saucers. 2. we sounds like... "sci-fi sunshine pop" "electronic-tinged psych-pop songs buzzing with life" "like my super NES made an LP" "dream-like romps through a blip-rock playground" 3. we like toys... spaceships are cool use: 1960s stylophones, glockenspeils, theremins, vocoders, omnichords, melodicas, toy phones, fisher price tape decks, thingamagoop, acoustic guitars and tenori-on, to create their own special brand of sunshine pop. 4. we like radio... even in their early days, spaceships have been popular on the airwaves. being broadcast on many diy & underground podcasts. More recently: our debut EP broke into the CMJ top 100 charts in the US. Played on American Airlines in flight podcast, BBC 6 music, SPIN earth website, cloud sounds, radio crystal blue, banana peel radio CA, Leftlion podcast & live sessions for BBC Nottingham. 5. we like compilations... spaceships are cool currently have tracks out there on a number of compilation lps. 'I can count music 2' (lo-fi electro UK) 'kindassult' (much diy stuff from Manilla/New york) 'Happy Aua' (underground label Berlin) 'Leap unsigned' (london based tv sync music agency) 'Supernight' (legendary Nottingham live show) 'Towntone' (tokyo based indie label), Winter records VOL 3 (french tribute to John williams), Indie circuit VOL 1 & 2 (lo recordings production music LPs), The strange world of Bernard Fevre (remix LP of the 1970s French Synth master). Spaceships track 'Sent it to you' also features on the soundtrack to Greenlandic film 'Nuummioq' relesed later this year. 6. we like sharing... recently, spaceships are cool have been working on collaboration projects with Tokyo based DJ/laptop artist 'Tatatamoto' (tracks featured on Huw Stephens radio 1 & being played in clubs in shibuya as we speak!) and with Newcastle/Lisbon based DJ 'Mr Bird' (soon to be released in Japan on towtone compilation), as well as working on new tracks with Icelandic electro band 'Bloodgroup' and Sunday best artist 'Fear of Theydon'. 7. we like meeting people... so far... spaceships are cool have played Glastonbury festival UK, CMJ music marathon NYC, Liberty festival in trafalgar sq UK, and performed live shows at many wonderous nights in the UK, from laptop sets in tiny soho basements, opening for a major fashion show @ nottingham arena and Birmingham NEC. 2010 will see the full band venturing to Reykjavik, SXSW, NXNE, san diego indie fest, UK summer festivals and another CMJ appearance.
