About Sofi Green

At last, there’s a new girl on the block in the music world, and she’s destined to blow your mind. Meet Sofi Green: She’s the one your mother warned you about; the girl with the envious head-turning style you’ll want as your best friend, and the girl you’ll quite frankly be foolish to ever mess with. With the release of her fierce, genre-bending debut album overflowing with slick, sexy tracks, Beautiful Mess, out summer 2012, the budding provocateur isn’t holding anything back while taking the world on her kaleidoscopic journey. So dust off your best dancing shoes, and grab a handful of tissues… things could get (beautifully) messy. “Love is beautiful, but it’s messy as fuck,” says Sofi, never one to mince her words, about the album’s back-story. “Love is kind of like the moon — it has two sides. And trying to stay on the pleasant side in a world full of temptation is difficult… Trying to keep yourself balanced really isn’t easy,” she says. Whether you’re a brokenhearted girl looking for Mr. Right in all the wrong places, or a confident, fearless single lady raring to hit the city streets and leave the one that got away behind, Sofi’s got something for all on Beautiful Mess, specifically those who realize that “ain’t shit perfect” according to the chanteuse. “But you can create your own happy place and rock the fuck out.” Rocking out is an absolute given on Sofi’s explosive debut, with her velvety smooth pipes and sassy rapping shimmering over electro, ’80s tinged beats and dance floor-ready hip-hop bangers. Inspired by a wide array of musical influences, ranging from the feminine spunk of Cyndi Lauper and Debbie Harry, the in-your-face, sexual prowess of Prince and Madonna, to today’s eccentric, unapologetic, trend-defying divas like Kelis and Gwen Stefani, stamping a pigeonholing label on Sofi simply isn’t possible. But leave it to the burgeoning diva to sum up her unique sound best: “I call it renegade revolutionary hip-pop. Renegade because of my personality and revolutionary because it’s something different.” A frenetic lifestyle as a full-time entertainer was in the cards early on for the Washington, D.C. native, who fondly remembers jamming out to her parents’ ’80s dance records and belting into her hairbrush as a kid for anyone who would listen. It came as no surprise when Sofi opted for studying dance at the prestigious Duke Ellington School Of The Arts in D.C. over a traditional education, before eventually trekking to New York City where she impressively double-majored in Communication Arts and Theater at Fordham University. In between studies, the passionate workaholic used her work study money to take trips to Atlanta for recording sessions (in Dallas Austin’s studio) before nabbing her first production deal, and ultimately being signed to Rico Love’s Division 1/Motown Records. “I definitely don’t wanna come into it half-stepping,” admits Sofi, whose eyes aren’t solely set on dominating the charts. “I admire women who can balance their multiple talents and build an empire.” And that’s precisely Sofi’s unstoppable plan. From writing and then putting on a play in college which she named ‘Fashion’s a Bitch But Chic Happens’ to immersing herself with downtown New York’s fashion risk-taking crowd, Sofi is not your every day fashionista. When she’s not sitting front row during international Fashion Weeks, Sofi’s working on her very-own fashion line with her best friend. Like Sofi’s music, the designs are versatile: feminine and flirty, aggressive but playful, jaw-dropping statement pieces not suited for just any ordinary girl. With an in-depth background in theater/dance and fashion, it’s no surprise Sofi is big on beautiful, emotion-inducing aesthetics and theatrics. Expect the dynamic diva to bring high-energy, titillating dramatics on stage to convey her story to the fullest, but don’t expect her to be anyone but herself. “I’m a real life girl-next-door who took a chance, discovered life, and got a few bumps and bruises. But a bitch is gonna be okay!” And Sofi will make you feel more than okay on Beautiful Mess, with themes about self-love and overcoming toxic relationships flourishing on the roller-coaster soundtrack to her life. “It’s about finding yourself, discovering the healthy and unhealthy versions of love, enjoying every second of this passionate journey called ‘life’ and not giving a fuck about what anyone thinks –as long as you and your loved ones in the world are happy,” she says with a big smile. In a world overstuffed with pop starlets and their penchant for heavy-on-irony costumes and little-on-substance music, Sofi is keeping it refreshingly real on the dance floor. “A lot of songs nowadays are all sex-driven or just dance crap with no purpose… I believe I make lifestyle and anthem music. I make statement records that speak to my audience,” says the passionate, unapologetic born artist. The sky’s certainly the limit for Sofi, and just as she sings about on Beautiful Mess, she’s a fly girl. The world will soon agree… they don’t make ‘em like Sofi Green.
