About Parka
There's obviously more than one band named Parka.
1. Parka are a Scottish indie-electro-dance-pop band from Glasgow, now based in Whitchapel, London. They formed in Feb 2005 when singer/guitarist Matty Thompson grew tired of his studies and decided to make a band, by finding drummer, Neil Johnson, bassist Ian Alexander, keyboardist Mark Hedges and saxaphonist Bob.
In September 2006 they released their debut single Disco Dancer, complete with balloon video, through the 7" label Worst Case Scenario. This took many by surprise; winning Fresh Meat on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show and getting playlisted on Xfm. Parka then went from strength to strength touring with Boy Kill Boy, opening for The Automatic and signing to indie label Jeepster.
Shortly after this, saxaphonist Bob departed the band to be replaced by James Craise.
Parka's second single If You Wanna was released in April 2007, reaching #11 on the indie chart and being playlisted on both Mtv2 and Xfm. Meanwhile the band were getting more notable support slots with artists such as Switches, The Young Knives and The Enemy; as well as doing their own headline tour.
Parka recorded their debut album in the summer of 2007, shortly after which saxophonist James departed the band, to be replaced by Steve.
Disco Dancer was rereleased in January 2008 and became Alex Zane's single of the week. It received numerous plays on the Zane Lowe show and reached the daily playlist on Xfm Scotland.
Better Anyway was to be the next release in April 2008, soon to be followed in May by debut album Attack Of The Hundred Yard Hardman.
2. Born from Passion, fueled by Dutch windmills and created to bring new and exciting Rock ‘n Roll music.
Modpunks, Hippierockers, Bangers, what ever you’d like to call them. Happy songs in dirty waters. Dark edges with a silver line. Howling winds and burning rooftops.
All four Parkans were born in the 80’s in Stellingwerf, a rural district in the southern part of Friesland in the Netherlands.
Before they started to combine their powers to make Rock ‘n Roll music, the Parkans had already moved to different city’s all over the country. At the time being, Herwin and Simon reside in the city of Utrecht, while Alex and Dennis hold their fort in the city of Leeuwarden.
Nevertheless the Parkans always come together to write songs and practice on there ‘root ground’ of Stellingwerf.
In it’s current formation Parka has been together for almost two years now. In that period of time the four Parkans have played at several festivals, bars and happenings and have recorded a demo with the help of their producer Cees Pols. He has also worked with Rude Boy from Urban Dance Squad and is known to be an excellent producer, just listen to the Parka demo.
3. There is also a German band called Parka.
