The New Amsterdams started as a solo side project for The Get Up Kids frontman Matt Pryor. He felt he needed another outlet for his stripped melodies. So with grainy acoustics and lyrical dynamics, the New Amsterdams issued their debut, Never You Mind, in fall 2000. Two years later, Pryor took a break from his bandmates to record a follow-up album, Para Toda Vida. In 2004, The New Ams released Worse For The Wear.
The next year, the album Killed or Cured was scrapped for release and converted into an online-only, downloadable EP (featuring only some of the original album's songs). The entire album has since been made available.
Their new album Story Like a Scar, was released early in 2005 to great acclaim. This album featured not only Matthew Pryor but a set band to make up what is now The New Amsterdams.
