About Matt DeVries

Matt DeVries (born January 28, 1977). Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, DeVries was raised with a hard-nosed Midwestern work ethic painted against the backdrop of a city long known for its gray skies and industrial roots, an upbringing that created the perfect breeding ground for his musical style. Known for a strong rhythm hand, impeccable timing, punishing grooves, and a devastating staccato riff attack, DeVries entered the music scene in 1995 at the age of 17 with a local band, Ascension. Fast-forward 6 years later - beyond Ascension and a subsequent 2-year tour of duty with hardcore legends Ringworm - and DeVries quickly found himself picking up rhythm duties in Chimaira, replacing long time friend and one of the founding Chimaira members, Jason Hager, who had decided to step down to focus on family life With his trademark windmills and down-and-dirty approach to metal, DeVries helped define the music scene during his 10 years with Chimaira, and successfully transformed into the signature artist he is today. In this time, DeVries contributed significantly to 4 major studio albums, signed exclusive endorsements, and landed a prestigious spot on stage right of some of the world's biggest venues - Ozzfest, Sounds of the Underground, Music As A Weapon, Mayhem Fest, Download Festival, Rock Im Park, Rock AM Ring, Grasspop, Summer Slaughter, Wacken - next to some of the biggest names in metal - Ozzy, Slayer, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Danzig, Disturbed, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Korn, etc. After exiting Chimaira in late 2011, DeVries was asked to take over bass duties for LA's industrial metal legends, Fear Factory. In late 2013 DeVries also filled in on bass for his friend John Campbell of Lamb Of God for a handful of shows due to a family emergency. Matt's interests outside of music include Pittsburgh Penguins hockey and all things NHL, mountain bikes, and most importantly being a proud father. His most memorable tracks from his career include "The Dehumanizing Process" and "Resurrection".
