About Kodascope

Since the dying light of MySpace, Kodascope was the low-fi moniker for singer/guitarist Michael Tipton to put out song sketches. "I taught art to kids in detention centers on the weekends and putting together a collection of their artwork for an annual showcase and I thought it'd be fun to put some background music together. I started recording from home, using my roommate's (percussionist Justin Skinner) equipment for songs that weren't over 3 minutes and were created as a moody soundtrack." says Tipton. "I thought the name Kodascope was ideal because it was really around the time when bands were releasing albums made from home recordings because the technology was available. I thought the story of Kodascope being one of the first projectors available for people to use in their homes to share films they made was appropriate and kind of summed up what I initially was doing." The moniker lay dormant for years as Tipton and drummer/percussionist Matt Hayden worked on music for the electro-pop group, Molly Picture Club. During that time, Hayden and Tipton recorded song ideas in Hayden's Southland Studios. "Some of the songs we started working on didn't fit the sound we were going for in Molly Picture Club, so we kind of worked on them when the beer ran deep and there wasn't anything else on the schedule." says Tipton. In 2013, Skinner, Hayden, and Tipton began compiling the tracks for the Kodascope album in Skinner's West Bottoms studio. Contributing to the recording are Megan Zander (Dream Wolf, REN), Josh Davidson (Orthon Anderthon), and Andy Kirk (Anna Cole and The Other Lovers). Ashleigh Guthrie, keys, Brent Jamison, bass, and Andy Kirk, guitar joined Kodasope in the Spring of 2014 as the group wraps up recording their debut album. Influenced by funk, soul, afrobeat and pop, Kodascope creates music that is dance floor sustainable.
