About Kevin Sun

Kevin Sun is a saxophonist, improvisor, composer, and writer based out of Brooklyn, New York. Aside from performing with the collaborative quartet Great on Paper (GOP) and chordless quartet Earprint, Kevin has shared the stage with artists such as Vijay Iyer, James Moody, Kenny Burrell, Dave Liebman, and Rich Perry, among others, and has performed at venues such as Wally's Jazz Café (Boston), Smalls Jazz Club (NYC), Sunside Jazz Club (Paris), Symphony Space (NYC), and Carnegie Hall (NYC). As a composer, he continues to explore open-ended and through-composed musical architectures for quartet and other small configurations. He has also composed for film and radio, as well as spatialized diffusion in electroacoustic settings. Sun is currently the editor-in-chief of Jazz Speaks, the official blog of The Jazz Gallery, a not-for-profit jazz cultural center in New York City. He has conducted interviews with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redman, Miles Okazaki, Ben Wendel, Steve Lehman, and Linda Oh, among others. He also writes A Horizontal Search, a jazz and literature blog. A 2014 graduate of Harvard College (summa cum laude), Kevin studied English and was awarded the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for his senior thesis, a collection of nonfiction essays about jazz and improvisation. As an undergraduate, he worked as an associate editor for Fifteen Minutes, the magazine of The Harvard Crimson, and was a Finalist for the 2013 Associate Collegiate Press Feature Story of the Year. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Signet Society. Sun completed his studies at The New England Conservatory of Music as part of the Harvard-NEC Dual Degree program, earning a Master of Music (M.M.) degree in Jazz Performance in May 2015. He is the first-ever jazz saxophone performance major to graduate from the five-year program. Jazz saxophonist, composer, and blogger. "Like" my page for daily jazz content and more!
