Phantom Of The Operation is the work of one enfant terrible who has scattered his Prozac over the railing on his walk home across the river. At each pause Jordan shovels air back into his lungs like a man gasping his last breath. He is desperate to spill his frustrations. With repeated listens I have begun to spin together his narrative web, but free associative tangents sever plot lines and send the fragments off on wisps of the breeze. This lack of continuity makes these songs nothing more than a private journal entry, indecipherable to the listener. Still, it is clear Jordan delivers this music with his heart. This fact, and his lyrical complexity, forced me to delay judgment and live with this record for several days. But even as the repetition endeared the brooding production to me, the self-indulgent tantrums became less tolerable. Jordan seems inspired by Rimbaud’s urging for a “long, intimidating, immense and rational derangement of all the senses.” Ultimately it is exactly that sense of derangement that this record delivers to me. It is hip-hop. But as someone who has always loved the idea of hip-hop, it was glorious to find people actually doing it the way I liked; dark, deep, sad & demented. No rapping about hoes, bling, your piece or anything like that. Jordan is ripping his insides out & shoving them into a notebook. Sure, I could compare him to Eminem but there’s no thug mentality here; from what I can tell, Jordan’s based out of Minneapolis/Cali. None of the violence-saturated misogyny of Eminem’s slum Detroit roots (or at least, the identity of which he crafted for shock purposes, I’m sure). But really, it’s not just Miché’s show; he’s backed by a master-class producer simply called Ecid, pretty much the backbone of the FILL IN THE BREAKS crew that Jordan belongs to; one of those over-achieving beat-masters like El-P or RJD2. I’ve heard his other collaborations; he seems satisfied with classic hip-hop style most of the time. But when he’s working with Jordan Miché, he whips micro-managed strings & thumps into an eerie funhouse mirror. It’s a testament to Jordan’s rhyme-speaking that Ecid’s cerebral work compliments rather than contrasts. So, they have a new EP. Here’s the whole thing to download for free. Here’s a taste; Compared to Jordan Miché’s full length (buy it on iTunes or Amazon), the EP is more energetic, sharper but not as unorthodox. There isn’t anything as catchy as “I Hate You” or as brilliantly menacing as “TigerSharks” but that’s a credit to his full-length, not a diss on the EP. As a stop-gap between LPs, this EP is perfect. It serves the purpose of displaying the subtle, tasty evolution Jordan is going through. This is the sound of a ghoul wearing someone’s skin; the slick familiarity of these new tracks serves only to frighten you more when he drops his bombs. “Generation X Is Dead (REMIX)” is a perfect example of this; drowsy beats playing follow the leader with a terrifying piano melody ripped from an unreleased Resident Evil game. The rhymes are absolutely unforgiving; “The world’s gonna end in five years, where you gonna be?”. The best part of the EP is hearing Miché flex his facial muscles; sometimes his mask is just slightly grinning but it’s an illusion; unlike his early work, he’s willing to let Ecid lead you out to the deep end before pulling you under. It’s hard to get bored of this stuff; bouncing from the early Gorillaz-outcast “The New Era” to a sampled jazz-skronk freakout intro on the title track leading to a screw-faced inversion of Eminem’s schtick.
