About James Japan
New York’s very own; 26 year old aspiring artist James Japan. Having the world hear his own rendition of R&B/ Urban music could be a dream come true. James has been singing and songwriting at a very young age, along with performing in the churches and in various schools. He may just be a regular guy from Jamaica Queens NY, but when he records and performs; a beast unleashes from within and grabs your attention. although he almost lost sight of his dream, listening to singer Sade, pulled him back into his own reality and he has been working harder than ever to accomplish his goals. "James Japan" was given the name Shamel Stevens at birth, one day the name James Japan came to mind while he was writing a song, “James” being his middle name and “Japan” meaning Just Always Pray At Night. He truly considers himself to be an artist and always striving to bring a fresh new sound to the world.
James began producing and recording on a small old laptop in the beginning and posted songs on myspace to get some feedback. Since then, he was always been told that he was destined for greatness by choir directors, friends, family, teachers and even strangers on the internet. He knew from that point on that he would someday be as great as those people claimed him to be, and he knew that it was important to begin investing in his talent. Though he is impressed with how far he has come, he is always looking for new ways to improve his voice, stage presence and image.
“To be loved and stay relevant in the music industry you have to maintain a total package and give the fans what they want.” he says. Even though he's always received great feedback on his work, he knows that not everyone will be impressed. "It is important to have tough skin, suck it up and keep pushing forward." He has been working on getting himself known and interacting and collaborating with many people, and even appearing in the Broadway show “The Greatest Love Story Ever Told” and several talent shows throughout the tri-state.
With great hopes of performing on big stages around the world, he is focuses on achieving his goals and will continue to work hard until he has done so. “My late father will be so proud of me when I conquer this dream and I refuse to let him down."
