About Foxes!

Foxes! are an experimental project founded by Adam and Kayla Bell along with now-departed Daniel Pacrami, in a garden in Oxford in the winter of 2005.

Originally a five-piece under the name The Hola Thirties, featuring drummer Sam Robinson and guitarist Hamish Burnett, the two members parted company prompting Kayla to start learning the drums. They played their first gig in the Port Mahon venue in Oxford that December.

Their first EP followed in April 2006. Entitled "46a Appleside Drive", named after the street where the band lived and wrote their songs together, it was recorded in one day on Cowley Road and produced by Jimmy "Evil" Hetherington in his home studio.

The packaging was designed and home-produced by Kayla with help from Adam and Daniel. It featured tags bearing the EP's title, tracking list and additional information, and was inspired by a recent art project that Kayla was working on at art school.

The EP quickly found a receptive audience and appeared on blogs around the internet with high praise. Stand-out track "6 O'Clock" featured on a compilation from indie pop label Alcopop! in January 2007. Printed on miniature CDs with a yellow cardboard case, the compilation has now become a collector's item.

The band returned to Hetheringon’s studio to record their second EP "Hellomynameishenry@hotmail.com" in February 2007. Featuring a more raw and experimental edge to their first, more poppy release, the EP took several sessions to complete and featured more overdubbing and additional production to “46A Appleside Drive”.

It was also well-received and was awarded the coveted title of Demo of the Month in highly-esteemed local monthly publication Nightshift Magazine. Stand-out track “Welcome To The Jivin’” was released as a download-only single by local Oxford label Shifty Disco.

After two years of solid gigging around Oxford, as well as shows at underground nights in London, Northampton and Leeds and various local radio sessions and interviews, they played their last performance with founding member Daniel Pacrami at The Cellar in Oxford in August 2007.

At this point, Adam and Kayla relocated to Brighton and Daniel moved to London, ending his career in the band under amicable terms.

In a relatively seamless transition, Foxes! recruited a new keyboard and bass player Alan Grice in October, after playing one gig at The Exeter Hall pub in Cowley with Oxford band Stornoway’s rhythm section Oliver and Robert Steadman.

Alan made his live debut at The Good Ship in Kilburn in November 2007 and on record with another Shifty Disco download single “The Panda Bear Song” in December.

The single was recorded and produced by Ben Elliott and Matthew Twaites, old friends and members of Brighton band Restlesslist at the now-defunct Fitzherbert Centre in Kemp Town.

Foxes! ended 2007 embarked on a successful Christmas tour of France with Henley-On-Todd playing shows in Paris and Bordeaux.

The recording sparked the beginning of the band’s attempts to record their debut album with Twaites, with intermittent help from Elliott. Throughout several different sessions across 2008, starting at St John’s College in Hanover and Peppercorn Studios, Kemp Town, the first fruits of their labour surfaced that summer with the song “It’s Ridiculous, Adam”.

This song was started in Twaites’ home studio and finished at Peppercorn Studio. It was picked up by new label CatCutter Records as the opening track on an innovative compilation called “A Sketch For Summer”.

Recording was moved to Metway Studios shortly after the song was finished. By the end of the summer, it was nearing completion until a large chunk of the recording was lost after a data loss caused by a faulty hard drive. At the end of 2008, most of lost recording had been re-recorded and the album is expected for international release in 2009.

Twaites played a gig with Foxes! in September at The Free Butt pub in Brighton for a support slot for Canadian indie pop band Islands.

Foxes! ended their year with a download-only home-recorded EP consisting of an original Christmas tune entitled “Christmas Songs” along with four festive covers including indie pop lo-fi home recordings of “Winter Wonderland” and “Jingle Bell Rock”.
