When it comes to Doug Woolverton, everyone wants to know how he creates his tone, how he is able to get them off their feet! Whether you are in awe, or amazement; you will wonder how this single trumpeter will move you in a way you never expected. Yeah, he’s that good; and good natured too! When you see him, you’ll see his secret weapon. It’s so secret, we can’t tell you here! Professional musician, composer, and band leader, Doug Woolverton, has been cultivating his smooth, soulful, yet energetic trumpet sound for audiences around the world becoming one of the most in demand, versatile trumpeters of his generation. Hailing from Northern State University (Aberdeen SD) receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Trumpet performance, Doug honed in on his skills of soulful soloing, songwriting, reading, and arranging. His mentor and trumpet teacher, Dr. Grant Manhart, helped focus Doug’s sound and beautiful tone which has led to his full time career performing over 250 shows around the world each year. He’s in high demand! You may see him performing with his own band, the Groove Merchants, with Roomful of Blues, or alongside artists such: Aretha Franklin, John Scofield, Jerry Jemmott, Bernard Purdie, Victor Wainwright, James Cotton, Coleman, Jim Pugh, J. Geils, Johnny Vidacovich, John Herrington, Shari Puorto, Carl Fischer, Curt Ramm, Kenni Holmen, Dan Moretti, Duke Robillard, Jimmy Haslip, Eric Bloom, Al Copley, Ron Levy, (also see Discography), and other notable artists. Doug is a delight to listen to and work with because of his ability to play many different styles of music. From creating melodic phrasing, composing and arranging horn lines, to his superb improvisational skills. His sound says it all! Is he for hire with your band or recordings? You bet! (see Contact page). A Trenton, New Jersey native, Doug began playing the trumpet at the young age of 7. Growing up with a very musical family, he was surrounded by the musical influences of his father, Rev. Paul Woolverton Jr, who plays Hammond organ, piano, and trumpet, his mother who sang in community/church choirs, his older sister who played clarinet, and his twin brother who played the saxophone and drums. After graduating high school, Doug joined the internationally known, 5-time Grammy nominated blues band, Roomful of Blues, and has recorded on their two latest albums, “Hook, Line, and Sinker” and “45 LIVE”. Mark your calendars! On September 16th, 2017: Doug Woolverton presents: A Tribute to Miles Davis. This incredibly crafted show that Doug produces, has become a popular musical performance and hugely successful among traditional Miles Davis fans to music enthusiasts of all ages. Due to his sellout event in 2016, Doug has been asked to perform and produce this concert again in 2017 at the Odeum Theater in East Greenwich, RI. This particular evening you will see some special guest artists (TBA) performing with Doug as it's getting national attention from Notable musicians and Promoters. In 2015 Doug joined New York City based band Beginnings. This CHICAGO Tribute Band, performs around the word bringing you the greatest hits of the band Chicago. When Doug is not recording or on tour he can be seen working with various local artists and bands like, The Groove Merchants, The Broad Street Gumbo Band, and The Ravers. You never know where he'll show up next! Notable awards and nominations: Wang Dang Doodle award- Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise Blues Music Award-"This Time for Real"-Billy Price/Otis Clay Inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame- Roomful of Blues Boston Music Award- Roomful of Blues Doug Woolverton is a professional trumpet player.
