About Defy the Tyrants

San Diego’s Defy The Tyrants returns with their sophomore ep, Asylum. With their first release, Wrest The Crown (2017), Defy introduced themselves as a musical hybrid of Djent, Thrash, and Metalcore, incorporating lyrical themes such as self-deprecation, social commentary, and apocalyptic endings to create the sound as well as the voice of the band. In 2018, the 5 piece metal unit released two singles, the grittier toned “Guillotine”, and the melodic/djent-infused “Dominate To Desecrate”. Both songs introduced new styles of Defy The Tyrants to their growing audience, but with the release of their 5 song epic, Defy will change how fans and followers view the band forever. If Wrest The Crown was the introduction of Defy The Tyrants, then Asylum is the arrival of the sound that the band has been brewing for the last two years.
Produced by Tyler Sullivan (Defy The Tyrants’ Wrest The Crown ep), Asylum is equal parts brutal and merciless as it is atmospheric and melodic. The lyrical themes this time are rooted in the much stigmatized topic surrounding mental illness and how mental illness influences people, directly and indirectly. Aggressively tragic, Defy The Tyrants wastes no time in creating a fresh new sound that few in the metal community have explored. 2019 is poised to be the breakout year for these San Diego natives and should have many fans banging their heads while Defy The Tyrants prepare an even bigger release ahead.
