About Butterknife Wives

“Live and Dangerous” are two words that have been used to describe the Butterknife Wives, Detroit's very own heavy groove rock band. This power-trio takes the stage and always manages to deliver something new to their fans. You can tell right away when you hear their songs. Their creative use of distorted guitar riffs and melodies will continue play through your head blasted on repeat for days. The band features Jason Karman on lead guitar and vocals, Kenny Kochajda on bass guitar and vocals, and Robert Griffin on drums. Even though the group primarily focuses on writing songs with structure, there is an untamable wild side. As Robert explains, “It's not easy to tell someone exactly what we do...we can just start playing and come up with something out of nowhere, on the spot; and it sounds like a complete song with parts and transitions.” Every great band has great rhythm and groove. Robert's drumming creates a solid foundation for the music, while with Kenny's groovy bass lines, it's no wonder why the group can “make up a song” for 20 minutes when they get down to it. Influences among the group are vast, and cover the grounds of several music genres. Take some Muddy Waters blues rooted guitar, with some Phishy transmuted Entwistle bass, add a drummer who likes both the Beatles and Bullet for My Valentine, and you just might have a sound similar to the Butterknife Wives. On top of being the guitar player, Jason has an interest in recording and music production. He prefers the sound of two-inch tape over modern-day digital. Not only that, but also the conceptual limitations that arise from having to record things right or redo them; there is no fixing it later in the mix. He has also become the owner of a Helios Console, which is in use in the Metro Detroit area. All of their recordings to date have been self-produced and recorded, but as of this year (2014) the band is finishing up tracks recorded at Metro 37 Studios for an upcoming EP release. The band has recently received FM radio airplay in Detroit, and has previously seen FM radio airplay in Scotland, as well as been featured on several internet radio stations. Butterknife Wives is definitely a performance-based band. Jason and Kenny both bring touring experience to the group. Since forming, the band has managed to place a wide number of shows underneath their belt, and even has done a small amount of traveling, playing out as far out as Pittsburgh. What's next for the group? In this ever-so-changing music industry, there are some new ways of thinking, and Butterknife Wives is grasping on to this. The band plans to break through the noise barrier of social media using their recordings and the proper placement, allowing more and more people to discover what it is exactly that this band does. This will be an ongoing process, and of course Butterknife Wives is still hoping to keep the CD alive for all the music lovers out there.
