About Brett Schulz
The Canadian prairies foster creativity unlike any other region in the country. This glaring distinction is evident in the polished guitar playing and mellow vocals of Brett Schulz, a rising Winnipeg artist.
Brett was born and raised in a small southern Manitoba town, where harsh winters exhumed the need to discover a creative outlet—something to spark warmth amid chilled days.
The genesis of Brett’s heart for music dates back to his childhood, when he was surrounded by the influence of music and sound from family and friends. At 10 years old, he began playing guitar, eventually finding an interest in both acoustic and electric. Brett sought refuge in guitar icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Page—using these influences in his solo work and with bands.
As a teenager Brett leaned into blues music, gaining admiration for artists like B.B King, Rory Gallagher, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, who inspired in Brett a whole new dynamic for his personal sound and style. In 2017 Brett had the opportunity to perform with Taz Cruz and his group at a local outdoor blues concert, where Brett eventually had the chance to showcase his own band, The Blue Decades.
Though revered in town as a guitarist not to be missed, Brett yearned to stretch his talents. It didn’t take long before he added his voice to the mix. “This was a pivoting moment in my musical career, and it inspired an abundance of songwriting, recording, self-producing, and endless learning,” he says.
Brett released his first EP in 2019, titled “Begin Again”, which reflects a twist of life events and uncertainties. He followed this release with a second single in 2020, called “This Life”. A ballad with groovy undertones, the track contemplates how much life can change in such little time, without warning.
Brett can be found performing across Winnipeg and Manitoba. Writing, teaching and producing music keeps him busy and happy. Follow him on Facebook and Instagram.
